RESIDENTIAL BUILDING VUKOVARSKA

OBJECT ADDRESS
Vukovarska 35-35a, Zagreb

OBJECT AUTHOR
Drago Galić

YEAR OF CONSTRUCTION
1953 — 1957

Designed in 1953, and built in 1957, it is among the first larger objects built along the newly formed city traffic route, in Vukovarska Street. The emphasis on the functionality of the object and the application of modern building material – reinforced concrete, marked a break with traditional building forms and the creation, or acceptance of new, cubic shapes, modeled on Le Corbusier and his Unité d’ Habitation in Marseille. The author’s artistic sensibility is visible through the interesting colouring of the plastered parts of the facade, and the design skill through the organization of the interior space through two-story apartments – so-called “duplexes”. This building is a valuable example of modern architecture in the city of Zagreb and a significant work in the opus of architect Drago Galić ((1907. – 1992.). It is protected as an individual cultural property of the Republic of Croatia.
