The commercial and rental residential building Assicurazioni Generali was built on the main city square on the site of the demolished historicist palace Pongratz (which was owned by that insurance company since 1906). The author of the building is the famous Italian architect Marcello Piacentini. The building was designed and built from 1937 to 1940. Positioned on a specific polygonal plot that determines the origins of Radićeva and Tkalčićeva streets and forms part of the northern facade of Ban Josip Jelačić Square, and Splavnica, the architect maximizes the plot and executes a building with a total of nine floors. The building is specified by the Italian rationalism characteristic of the author. In accordance with the desire of the insurance company, the architect shapes a building that exudes solidity and monumentality. Above the eastern two-story portico on the first floor, professional organizations of architects operate – the Association of Croatian Architects and the Society of Architects of Zagreb, from whose premises open vistas are offered to Ban Josip Jelačić Square, Splavnica and Dolac.
