Gustav Bohutinsky spent the summer semester of 1930 at the Bauhaus where he attended the preparatory course, the legendary Vorkurs, which is then led by Josef Albers. The experimental course was a kind of trademark of the Bauhaus in which students thoroughly questioned previously acquired knowledge of conventions and freely and radically explored the basic aspects of space, form, techniques and materials. Bohutinsky then completed his architecture studies at Ibler’s school at the Royal Art Academy in Zagreb. His most famous work in recognizable Bauhaus aesthetics is the atelier for his brother sculptor Emil Bohutinsky on Jadranska Street. With an elementary cubic form, a large glass wall, thoughtful zenith lighting, functionally organized space and exposed constructions and materials – brick, reinforced concrete and glass – the atelier testifies to the lively presence of Bauhaus thought in the Zagreb environment. With impeccable functional solutions and reduced minimal means to achieve maximum formal effect, Bohutinsky’s atelier stands out as a conceptual offshoot of the innovative Bauhaus architectural idea and a sign of the spatial philosophy of that avant-garde art nursery.
